If you’ve been in Denver for long, just the word Highlands conjures up images of inviting taverns, stroll-able streets, fun shops, and maybe even memories of frolicking around the original Elitch Gardens. But it can be cause for confusion as well. To clarify, nowadays most locals, when they refer to the Highlands are referring to an area of four neighborhoods. These include the two neighborhoods of Highland and West Highland, but also the Sunnyside and Berkeley neighborhoods. It is not to be confused with Highlands Ranch, the large southern suburb of Denver.
Highlands has changed much since the days before our beloved amusement park moved downtown. All that is left of the original Elitches is the old theater and dome, which now houses a fun labyrinth. Nowadays, it is now one of the most sought after neighborhoods in town, both in terms of visiting for the day or to reside in for years to come.
Spend one afternoon there and you will understand why. The place is rich with history and there is no shortage of things to do. You can get lost in work on the patio of a local coffee shop in the morning then be howling at a comedy show come nighttime.
